From idea to validated, manufacturable product
I'm Ed Kernick, a former Engineering Fellow at Johnson & Johnson. I help product teams design smarter, automate with confidence, and run projects that finish on schedule.
How I help
Product innovation
Turn a rough concept into a working prototype, with the mechanical, software, and systems pieces thought through together.
Automation and machine vision
Robotic cells, vision-guided alignment, and machine-learning inspection that holds up on a real production floor.
Quality and design for manufacture
Designs that scale cleanly, backed by sound process validation and quality methods built for regulated industries.
Project leadership
Clear plans, honest risk tracking, and steady coordination across engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams.
Selected work
Vision-guided robotic soldering
A camera system that measures wire-to-pad offset so a robot can center each wire before soldering, reducing rework on fine-pitch assemblies.
AI monitoring of manual assembly
A video pipeline that detects tools and measures step timing, giving teams objective data on how assembly work actually happens.
Two decades of product development
From contact lenses to surgical products, leading development and manufacturing engineering across the full product lifecycle.
About Ed
I joined Johnson & Johnson Vision Care in 2000 and later moved to Ethicon, where I served as an Engineering Fellow. My work has spanned software, mechanical design and CAD, and systems architecture, usually all on the same project.
Now I work independently, bringing that experience to teams that need a senior engineer who can see the whole problem and help get it built.
